A high resolution spectral atlas of brown dwarfs
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a UVES/VLT high resolution atlas of three L dwarfs and one T dwarf system, spectral classes at which most of the objects are brown dwarfs. Our atlas covers the optical region from Hα up to the near infrared at 1 μm. We present spectral details of ultra-cool atmospheres at very high resolution (R ∼ 33 000) and compare the spectra to model calculations. Our comparison shows that molecular features from VO and CaH, and atomic features from Cs and Rb are reasonably well fit by current models. On the other hand, features due to TiO, CrH, and water, and atomic Na and K reveal large discrepancies between model calculations and our observations.

Time-resolved High Spectral Resolution Observation of 2MASSW J0746425+200032AB
Many brown dwarfs exhibit photometric variability at levels from tenths to tens of percents. The photometric variability is related to magnetic activity or patchy cloud coverage, characteristic of brown dwarfs near the L-T transition. Time-resolved spectral monitoring of brown dwarfs provides diagnostics of cloud distribution and condensate properties. However, current time-resolved spectral st...
متن کاملHigh-resolution Spectra of Very Low-Mass Stars
We present the results of high-resolution (1-0.4 Å) optical spectroscopy of a sample of very low-mass stars. These data are used to examine the kinematics of the stars at the bottom of the hydrogen-burning main sequence. No evidence is found for a significant difference between the kinematics of the stars in our sample with I–K > 3.5 (MBol ∼ 12.8) and those of more massive M-dwarfs (MBol ≈ 7 − ...
متن کاملA Medium Resolution Near - Infrared Spectral Atlas of O and Early B Stars
We present intermediate resolution (R ∼ 8,000-12,000) high signal-to-noise H− and K−band spectroscopy of a sample of 37 optically visible stars, ranging in spectral type from O3 to B3 and representing most luminosity classes. Spectra of this quality can be used to constrain the temperature, luminosity and general wind properties of OB stars, when used in conjunction with sophisticated atmospher...
متن کاملSpectroscopic rotational velocities of brown dwarfs
We have obtained projected rotation velocities (vrot sin i) of a sample of 19 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the interval M6.5–T8 using high-resolution, near-infrared spectra obtained with NIRSPEC and the Keck II telescope. Among our targets there are two young brown dwarfs, two likely field stars, and fifteen likely brown dwarfs (30–72MJup) of the solar neighborhood. Our results indic...
متن کاملHigh resolution spectroscopy of Brown Dwarfs in Taurus
We present high resolution optical spectroscopy of three candidate members of the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. Based on the spectral type, the strength, profile and width of the Hα line, the detected lithium at 6708 Å, the location of these objects in a H-R diagram and the comparison with similar objects belonging to young stellar associations, we determine that they are bona fide members...
